New Finds, Reading Update, and Suggestions.

I have been reading and looking at books since the last time I posted. Sometimes I just don’t have the inspiration to write about books.
But in order to make sure that all those tens of people that visit this blog semi-regularly know that I haven’t left, I’m just giving a quick update.
I have a few books going at the moment and I should finish them up in the next week so I’ll post a reading update when I get through with them. My collecting has slowed down, mostly because of time, and being that it is summer, I spend most of my time at my shore house reading and not thinking about finding a book, other than to read.
Right now I am finishing up reading Trinity: v. 1 and Monster
. I started reading Trinity as a weekly comic, but stopped picking it up. I figured it would become one of those series that I would rather read as a collected trade. Monster I found while browsing in Barnes and Noble the other week. Never heard of the author but the jacket copy caught my attention as did the opening paragraph. I’m enjoying it so far. He reminds me of Christopher Moore a bit. I also picked up Tachyon’s Michael Moorcock collection
and I think I might pick it up next since I haven’t read Moorcock and I hear he is quite good. What I would love to find is his steampunk novels.
I guess I’m just really looking to explore new authors in weird fiction. Think China Mieville and Tim Powers and similar authors. If you have any suggestions I would appreciate it.

A Quick Reading Rundown
Posted on | May 14, 2009 | No Comments
Just a quick post to round up what has been going on with me and my books.
First up: Recent books read:
The Golden Ratio: The Story of PHI, the World’s Most Astonishing Number by Mario Livio
Livio writes a great book on the history of phi. He takes a look at the fascination with this number throughout history and even tackles the pseudo-math throughout history that has tried to cram the golden ratio into everything from the Pyramids of Giza to the paintings of great artists. Where some mathematicians have fallen for the allure that phi seems to be built into everything, either consciously or naturally, Livio shows that this is more a phenomenon of trying to massage numbers so it works more so than the numbers actually working. THis, however does not diminish the importance of phi. Livio also ties phi and the Fibonacci numbers together and shows how Fibonacci numbers show up in odd places and behave in odd, but fascinating ways. Worth a read.
Comics as Books.

Thank Goodness for the Comic Book Companies Stepping into the 21st Century.
Not that I don’t like collecting comic books as individual issues. I do. I collect a few titles that are the core of my collection, but it is close to impossible to collect all of the excellent work that is coming out from the publishers right now.

My Book Store Lament

As It Pertains to Life in This World Reflected in Linear Feet of Shelf Space
I was at my local Borders the other day. Nothing unusual about that but something happened that made me very sad. It isn’t about the decreasing space for actual books in a book store (that is another topic) but about the linear feet of shelf space reserved for certain subjects.
Since this entry pertains to life in general I am not discussing the decrease in shelf space for horror or SF (once again another topic for another day). I am talking about the decrease in the shelf space for books on science and mathematics compared to say self-help or religion/occult/superstition.

Last Call by Tim Powers

I don’t think Tim Powers has a bad story in him. Then again I have only read one short story collection and two books by him. But so far I am really impressed.
Last Call [kindle edition] was the latest I read from Powers. I really enjoyed it. It is a monster of a novel at a little over 500 pages but you don’t feel like you’re wasting your time taking the extra few days to read this great book.
