HFNN Editorial Guidelines

So what will be accepted and what will be rejected as stories? Where should I put my contribution? Well here are the guidelines that I have come up with. They may change from time to time. When they do I will tell you about it.

There are eight categories for news stories; General News, Author’s News, Publisher’s News, Press Releases, Book Store News, Horror Comic News, From Page to Screen, and Appearances. Each I think is pretty self-explanatory. When contributing a story please make sure that you put your story into the correct category before submitting it. For example, if you are an author and your new novel is purchased by Leisure Books this would go under author’s News.

Now for some quick guidelines for each category.

General Horror Fiction News:
This section is for any story that doesn’t fit into the other categories.

Items that will likely be rejected or moved:
  • Stories that fit elsewhere
  • Stories not revolving around horror fiction or the horror genre.
  • Spam (this goes for all categories).

Author’s News:
News from Authors and about authors.

Items that will likely be rejected:
  • What I call “ A day in the Life” announcements. Leave the updates on progress of works to your LiveJournals or your own websites.
  • Announcements of Reviews in genre publications. Since we expect horror magazines and websites to review horror books please do not post your new reviews here. However, reviews in non-genre outlets like the NY Times, Publisher’s Weekly etc will be taken on a case-by-case basis.
  • No posting your auctions or other sales. We will not accept a story about an ebay auction of an author because they are auctioning off their stuff to pay bills or whatever. If you are auctioning rights to publish or film rights such it will be taken on a case-by-case basis.
  • Any other stories we deem to not fit into this category.
  • Sorry but self-published works announcements will not be considered for the site.
Items we are looking for:
  • New Book announcements.Sell a novel to Leisure? Sell an anthology to Cemetery Dance.Sell Foreign rights to Bantam? This is what we are looking for.We are not looking for your new short story sale or your new chapbook sale.
  • Film Rights or options for your works. Announce your options and possible film deals.
  • Other Author news that is important. Just use common sense when contributing. We will take everything on a case-by-case basis.

Publisher’s News:
News about and by Publishers

Items the will likely be rejected:
  • Books left in stock or books close to being sold out announcements for books that have been published in the past. New books or hot items that have sold out before announcement or the same day as announcement will more than likely be accepted.
Items that we are looking for:
  • New book line announcements
  • New Books in production
  • Production updates
  • Shipping updates.
  • Sales (Now be careful with this. If the sale is something that is routine then it will more than likely be rejected. If it is something special then go ahead and contribute)
  • Press Releases (Would more then likely go into the Press Releases section. But it will be looked at on a case by case).
  • New Author’s Signed to contracts.

Press Releases

  • Basically press releases by anyone. These will be taken on a case-by-case basis.

Bookstore News

  • Bookstores will be the only section where sales will be the majority of stories. However, routine sales will be rejected. If you decide on a new sale, like 10% off of all preorders which you haven’t done before we will accept it. Post your shipping updates, new releases, pre orders, Special deals etc. Each will be taken on a case-by-case basis but this category will have the most leeway.

Horror Comic News.

  • I doubt there will be many contributed stories here. This will be the least used category I suspect. This will contain stuff in the four-color world as it comes available. If you have a story to contribute it and we’ll take a look at it.

From Page to Screen

  • This category will be for stories that have already been optioned and are in the production phase or the release phase of bringing it to the small for big screen. Refrain from posting options announcement here. This will be for production notes and release dates.

Appearances

  • Have a signing? Convention? List of Signings in your store? This is where these will be posted. Since this category is pretty specific I don’t think there will be many stories rejected. Just make sure you are detailed in your information so people can find where you’re going to be appearing.

A few last words. Every story will be looked at and rejected or accepted on a case-by-case basis. It may be subjective at times and I will endeavor to email the contributor as to why the story was rejected. So when you sign up please use a valid email address.

A word about rumors. When you contribute a rumor the story has to clearly state that the story is a rumor. If it is a rumor and you fail to say so it will be rejected or deleted.

A word about contributions. Please cite sources when contributing stories that you find on the web or in print media. Use links when available.
